Two of the Most Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes By Sean McElhone of InfoCommissions.com Affiliate marketing is a great way to generate income, it gives you the opportunity to make money online even if you don’t have your own website setup. However, I always coach people towards having a minimum of at least a squeeze page (I will cover this in a different article). We will cover two major mistakes that affiliate marketers make and it can have an adverse effect on the overall outcome of their affiliate business. Avoiding these two mistakes can help you enhance and enjoy earning affiliate commissions. The merchant/vendor is the party that will pay their affiliates commissions based on the affiliates sales. Payment of commissions are the responsibility of the merchant/vendor and the affiliate’s job is to promote and sell the products of the merchant/vendor. Now, let’s take a look at two of the most common affiliate marketing mistakes: First, never send your prospects directly to the merchant/vendor website. Many times the affiliate marketer will send a prospect directly to the website without capturing the persons email address. Take the time to do this correctly and offer a free “benefit” to the person visiting the site. There is a huge possibility that the prospect will not like the product or service being offered, if this happens they will leave the website without buying a single thing; now you’ve probably lost a potential prospect FOREVER! Obviously the end game or goal is to build a long lasting and prosperous relationship with anyone that visits your site (minimum of a squeeze page). It’s imperative that you offer them some type of a “freebie”, example: a report, tips and tricks, tools, software, e-books, etc. By offering them a “freebie” the odds of them giving you their email increase exponentially. Doing this accomplishes a couple of positive things: 1) Your new prospects will most likely visit one of your sites in the future because the potential to get additional freebies from you, has increased, in a sense you’re training your prospect to return to your website. 2) More importantly, you now have the opportunity to market your products or services to them on a regular basis, as you have successfully captured their email address. Second, protect your commissions from commission theft. When affiliate marketing hit the scene it was actually referred to as associate programs and this was the birth of stealing associate (affiliate) commissions by “HiJacking” the associate’s (affiliates) link. Affiliate commission theft is still alive and well today, unfortunately it is one of the biggest drawbacks that affiliates face in building their affiliate marketing business. So, there is good news and bad news. The bad news is this: It is virtually impossible to avoid having or eliminate people from stealing your affiliate link, especially with technology, yes, there is software that can do this. However, I am not going to cover software in this article. The good news is this: you can be a proactive affiliate marketer and take steps or measures to reduce you exposure and risk of becoming a victim of commission theft. Using a “redirection” method or a “cloaking” method for your affiliate links are two options for you to implement in guarding against commission theft. Almost every affiliate link you come across will have some identifying factor in the link, such as: the affiliate link contains the affiliate id (which can be a number or a name) of the affiliate at the end of merchant/vendor website’s URL. An example is: http://www.example101.com?aff_id=your_affiliate_id So, here is the problem, anyone can easily “delete” the “aff_id” part of the equation in the above link. When this happens they go directly to the merchant/vendor website and make their purchases, this completely cuts the affiliate out, no commission, zilch, zero, nada for the affiliate. One solution to this problem is “cloaking” your affiliate links, there are several ways to do this, but, I will not be covering this method in depth, just a quick example. Good news is this: if you Google “how to cloak affiliate links” you’ll find many ways to accomplish this. The methods vary based on the utilization of WordPress and/or HTML sites. After cloaking your affiliate link it will look something like this: http://www.example101.com/affiliate_site I personally like using forwards or redirects of the affiliate link and here is the exact method that I use. Example: Let’s say that you are an affiliate for “dog toys” and your affiliate link looks like this: http://www.dogtoysarecool.com?aff_id=your_affiliate_id My method is simple, I go out and buy a domain name from http://www.BrandXHosting.com (you can use any registrar). Obviously I purchase a relevant domain name, such as: http://www.dogtoysrule.com I then login to my http://www.BrandXHosting.com account and forward http://www.dogtoysrule.com to (my affiliate link) http://www.dogtoysarecool.com?aff_id=your_affiliate_id When I market the dog toys to my list I use my new domain name and this method provides a cleaner view and transition to the affiliate site. The beauty of this method is the fact that if you have built or are "currently" building your relationship with your list, they will not go to the extreme to try and circumvent your affiliate link by clearing the cache, etc. People like to buy "stuff" from people that they know, like and trust! We just covered a couple of common mistakes to avoid as an affiliate marketer.
